Botox: Dysport & Fillers

Some useful information before you experience your complimentary injectable consultation with Dr. Cox

How Do Botox and Dysport work?

  • These products are called neuromodulators because they cause muscles that form facial lines due to facial expressions to relax.
  • The lines we see when our face is relaxed are called ‘static lines’. The lines we see when making expression are called “expressive lines”.
  • The “static lines” are the ones that often make men and women look older than we feel.
  • The most common areas where we notice these lines are the “11’s” between the eyebrows, forehead lines and “crow’s feet” around the eyes.
  • Other common areas of treatment are the fine lines above the lip and the downturn at the corners of the mouth.
  • Some of these areas of treatment, while common, may be “off label” for these products.
  • Over time with regular treatments the relaxation of the muscles can result in a decrease or disappearance of the lines giving us a more youthful appearance.

Treatment

  • When you see Dr Cox for your complimentary consultation you will tell him your areas of concern and he will make recommendations specifically for you about how treatment with these products can improve the appearance of those areas.
  • The treatment itself is usually done in about 10-15 minutes
  • The injections are commonly described as feeling like a little “pinch”
  • Most patients appear completely normal within 30 minutes of treatment, so its easy to go back to work or where ever life leads you that day.
  • The effects are usually seen within about 4-7 days and usually last about 3 months or a little more for each treatment. The effects are not permanent.

Advice

  • Note that treatment prices can vary.
  • You should be sure that wherever you go you have an experienced physician injector.
  • Beware Groupon and low-priced treatments- you are likely to get an unexperienced injector and possibly poor results that may or may not be correctable.
  • Nurses, PA’s and Nurse Practitioners, Dentists and even Podiatrists are now providing injections of Botox and Dysport. Please be sure you have confidence in your injector before moving forward with a procedure.

Fillers

What are fillers?
  • This a broad term for anti-aging injectable treatments that can add youthful volume to many areas of the male and female face. Most fillers last between a year and 18 months per treatment.
  • The most common fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid or HA.
  • HA is a natural substance in the skin that delivers nutrients, helps the skin retain moisture, softness, and adds volume.
  • Subtle laboratory modifications to the HA make it suitable for certain locations.
  • All HA fillers have the advantage of being reversible should a patient not enjoy the results of the treatment. These instances are very rare but have happened.
  • Another type of filler (Radiesse) is made of calcium hydroxyapatite, a substance found normally in bony tissues. This product usually lasts about a year. It is not reversible
  • The choice of filler placement and product used should be based on the expertise of the Injector and the expectations of the patient. Note some product uses here may be “off label” according to the manufacturer of the products
